How to Grow Your Email List (Even If You’re Starting from Zero)

April 09, 20256 min read

If you're starting your email list from scratch, it might feel overwhelming to know where to begin. Don’t worry—you’re in the right place. Growing your email list doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right steps, you can build a thriving subscriber base that actually wants to hear from you (and not just ignore your emails).

This guide breaks the process into actionable steps, from getting your first 10 subscribers all the way to scaling your list to 10,000 and beyond. Whether you’re a digital marketer or a marketing professional, these strategies will set you up for success.

Step 1: Understand Who You Are Serving

Before you start growing your email list, you need to answer one critical question—Who am I serving? Having a clear target audience ensures that your messaging will resonate with the right people. Without this clarity, your efforts will likely fall flat.

Think about:

• What problems your audience is facing.

• Where they go for help in solving those problems.

• What frustrates them about existing solutions.

For example, if you’re a fitness professional targeting busy professionals, you’ll want to focus on quick, effective solutions to staying fit despite a hectic schedule. Once you’ve defined your audience, it becomes much easier to create value that resonates with them.

Tip:

Create a simple profile of your ideal subscriber. Include their pain points, goals, and where they spend their time online. This will help guide your strategies moving forward.

Step 2: Start Small, But Strategic

Your first subscribers will likely come from people who already trust you. Start by reaching out to people in your network—friends, colleagues, and even a few past clients. These are the people who already believe in what you do and will be more likely to subscribe to your list.

Here’s how to ask:

• Send a friendly email or message about how you’re starting a newsletter and think it could be helpful for them.

• Explain the kind of content you’ll provide, like tips, solutions, or resources in your area of expertise.

• Ask them to join by providing a simple way to subscribe (such as a direct link to your sign-up form).

Getting those first 10 subscribers is key because they will help shape your strategy moving forward.

What’s Next?

Once you have your initial subscribers, ask them these two questions:

1 Where do they go to get help with their specific challenges (related to your thing)?

2 What do they find frustrating about the existing information they find?

Their answers will tell you where to focus your efforts and what value you can provide that others aren’t.

Step 3: Create a Lead Magnet That Resonates

When it comes to email list growth, a lead magnet is one of the fastest ways to attract subscribers. A good lead magnet offers something valuable in exchange for an email address.

Start with a Simple Offer

Based on the feedback from your first subscribers, create a lead magnet that solves a particular pain point or provides valuable insights. For example:

• A checklist (“10 Ways to Save Time on Social Media Marketing”).

• An ebook (“Beginner’s Guide to Growing Your Email List”).

• A template (“Free Social Media Calendar Template”).

Once you’ve created the lead magnet, promote it on the platforms your audience mentioned in Step 2 (e.g., social media, relevant forums, or industry blogs).

Where to Promote:

• Share it in niche Facebook or LinkedIn groups.

• Post it on your social media with a compelling call to action.

• Embed it prominently on your website or blog.

The lead magnet will act as a “bribe” for new subscribers, encouraging them to join your email list in exchange for the resource.

Step 4: Use Interactive Quizzes to Engage and Learn

Another highly effective tool for growing your list is offering interactive quizzes as lead magnets. Not only do quizzes engage your potential subscribers, but they also provide you with valuable information about your audience’s needs.

For example:

• A fitness coach might create a quiz titled "What’s Your Ideal Workout Style?" to gather email addresses and learn about their audience’s fitness preferences.

• A content marketer might create “What Type of Content Creator Are You?” to offer tailored tips.

Why Quizzes Work:

• People love personalized insights.

• The quiz results help you craft more customized content for your audience.

After people complete the quiz, include an option for them to join your email list to receive additional resources or results breakdowns.

Step 5: Scale Your List with Free Workshops

Once you’ve built a small but highly engaged subscriber list, it’s time to think bigger. Offering free workshops is a fantastic way to grow your email list while showcasing your expertise.

Here’s how it works:

• Choose a workshop topic that solves a specific problem your audience faces.

• Promote the workshop through your existing channels and ask your subscribers to share it with others.

• Require workshop participants to sign up with their email address to receive the workshop details.

For example, if you’re a content marketer, you might offer a 30-minute workshop titled “How to Write Emails That Convert” and share actionable tips.

Not only will this help you gain new subscribers, but you’ll also have a chance to deepen the relationship with your current list.

Step 6: Partner for Growth

Partnerships with other creators or brands in your industry can be another powerful way to expand your list. Look for creators whose solutions complement yours but don’t compete directly.

For example:

• A nutritionist might partner with a fitness app to offer cross-promotional lead magnets.

• A website designer could team up with a copywriter to create a joint resource for small business owners.

Collaborations could involve co-hosting webinars, writing guest blog posts, or featuring each other’s lead magnets in email newsletters.

What to Look For in a Partner:

• Alignment with your audience’s interests.

• A similar or larger reach than your own.

• Complementary skills or subject matter expertise.

Step 7: Rinse and Repeat

Growing an email list isn’t a one-time effort. It’s an ongoing process of refining your approach, listening to your subscribers, and offering value consistently.

Keep Asking Questions:

Continually survey new and existing subscribers:

1 What are they struggling with?

2 What kind of content are they hoping to see from you?

3 Where do they go for help right now?

Use these insights to improve your lead magnets, content, and campaigns over time.

Experiment and Adjust:

What works for one audience (or creator) may not work for another. A/B test different strategies, tweak your lead magnets, and consistently improve your offerings.
